The African Methodist Episcopal Church is the first fully independent Protestant denomination founded by Black Americans, established in Philadelphia in 1816 when Richard Allen and fellow congregants left St. George's Methodist Episcopal Church over segregated worship. It grew from Allen's Bethel congregation into a global denomination organized into episcopal districts across the United States, Africa, the Caribbean, and Europe. Its general offices are headquartered in Nashville, Tennessee.
