The Anwar Mosque beside the Merkato is the oldest and largest mosque in Addis Ababa, built around 1922 and completed with funds raised by the city's Muslims after the work was left unfinished. It is the main congregational mosque of the capital and the focus of Eid prayers, which overflow into the surrounding streets.
