Baitul Mukarram is the national mosque of Bangladesh, completed in 1968 to a design by Abdulhusein Thariani that sets a cube form recalling the Kaaba above a raised plaza in central Dhaka. It holds more than forty thousand worshippers with the surrounding grounds in use at Eid, which makes it one of the largest congregational mosques in the world by attendance. Management passed to the Islamic Foundation Bangladesh in 1975 and it now sits under the Ministry of Religious Affairs.
