The Kickapoo are an Algonquian-speaking people originally of the western Great Lakes region, whose communities were pushed successively through Illinois and Missouri under nineteenth century United States removal pressure before groups settled in Kansas, Oklahoma and, following a further migration, in Coahuila, Mexico, where the Kickapoo Traditional Tribe of Texas maintains ties today. In the 1820s the reformer Kenekuk, known as the Kickapoo Prophet, led a religious revitalization movement among the Kansas Kickapoo blending traditional belief with elements of Catholic practice, historians crediting his leadership as a significant factor in the Kansas Kickapoo retaining a land base that outlasted many neighboring nations' relocations.
