One of the most important dzuar, holy beings, in Ossetian tradition: patron of men, warriors, travelers and oath taking, invoked at the head of every traditional toast. After Christianization his cult increasingly overlapped with Saint George, but Ossetians maintain his own distinct festivals and mountain shrines, and tradition holds that women avoid speaking his name directly or attending some of his observances.

Origin of the NameWastyrdzhi's name is read by Ossetian studies scholars as a phonological development from Saint George, the Georgian and Byzantine Greek saint's name absorbed into Ossetian oral tradition through the region's Christianization; the shift from a saint's name to what functions as an independent dzuar, holy being, in Ossetian belief reflects the same syncretism with Saint George that shapes his cult more broadly. 1 Function

Attributes and IconographyWastyrdzhi is conventionally envisioned as a mounted warrior riding a great white, three-legged horse, an image distinct from the ordinary mounted Saint George of Christian icon painting his cult grew alongside; oral tradition describes this three-legged steed rather than any painted or carved cult image, since Ossetian dzuar veneration centers on mountain shrines and sacred groves rather than temple statuary. 1 Belief
