Hatha Yoga is the psychophysical branch of yoga built on posture (asana), breath control (pranayama), internal cleansing (shatkarma) and energetic locks and seals (mudra and bandha), aimed at balancing the body as a vessel for meditation and, in its own texts, the raising of kundalini. Its foundational manual is the fifteenth century Hatha Yoga Pradipika of Svatmarama, which draws together older tantric and Nath yogic material into that structured curriculum, alongside a subtle body cosmology of nadis and chakras culminating in union at the crown. The atlas follows the distinction scholars of modern yoga draw between this older tantric derived technical system and the twentieth century posture centered synthesis, credited chiefly to Krishnamacharya and his students, that became the globally taught practice most people now call simply yoga. The medieval hatha corpus, principally the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, the later Gheranda Samhita and the Shiva Samhita, treats the physical technique as preparatory: the stated aim is to still the body and its energies so that raja yoga, meditative absorption, becomes possible, not physical fitness for its own sake.

Mark Singleton's Yoga Body argues that the standing postures and flowing sequences that dominate modern practice took their present form in twentieth century India, drawing on European physical culture and Indian wrestling and gymnastic traditions as well as on hatha yoga. The classical corpus catalogued here bears that out from its own side: of thirty two postures in the Gheranda Samhita only two, the tree and the contracted posture, stand at all, and the Hatha Yoga Pradipika has none.

The Hatha Yoga Pradipika and Its System

The Hatha Yoga Pradipika, compiled by the yogi Svatmarama probably in the fifteenth century CE, is the single most influential manual of hatha yoga and the text on which the Hatha Yoga discipline described here is anchored. It draws together older tantric and yogic material, much of it associated with the Nath tradition and the semi legendary teachers Matsyendranath and Gorakshanath, into a structured curriculum. The text opens by naming hatha yoga a preparatory discipline whose purpose is to still the body so that raja yoga, meditative absorption, becomes possible, rather than treating physical mastery as an end in itself. Its four chapters cover asana, seated and postural forms meant to steady the body for long practice; pranayama, breath retention and regulation said to govern the vital force, prana; mudra and bandha, physical locks and seals meant to direct that force along the subtle channels, or nadis, toward the central Sushumna and up through the chakras; and a concluding treatment of nada, inner sound, and samadhi, absorption.

A related section, common to the wider hatha corpus and elaborated further in the later Gheranda Samhita and Shiva Samhita, describes shatkarma, six cleansing techniques for the digestive and respiratory passages, prescribed before the subtler practices are attempted. The text repeatedly warns that its more advanced techniques, especially breath retention and the raising of kundalini, require gradual progress under a qualified teacher rather than self directed effort.

From Medieval Manual to Global Practice

Hatha yoga's medieval technical system and the yoga most commonly practiced worldwide today are related but not identical, a distinction scholars of modern yoga have traced in detail. Colonial era reformers such as Vivekananda, presenting yoga to Western audiences from the 1890s onward, emphasized its philosophical and meditative side and largely set aside the ascetic hatha body of practice, which had by then acquired a reputation in parts of Indian society as marginal or disreputable. The posture centered, health oriented yoga now taught internationally took shape only in the early to mid twentieth century, chiefly through the Mysore teacher Tirumalai Krishnamacharya, who combined older asana material with elements of contemporary European gymnastics and physical culture into a vigorous, sequenced practice.

Two of his students carried that synthesis to global audiences by different routes: Pattabhi Jois, who systematized a fixed sequence of postures into what became known as Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, and B. K. S. Iyengar, whose precise, prop assisted method built the practice most widely taught in the West under the Iyengar name. Because this modern lineage draws on hatha material without reproducing the Hatha Yoga Pradipika's own text, structure or stated aim, the atlas treats it as a documented historical development from hatha yoga rather than a straightforward continuation of the medieval system, the same distinction its parent Discipline entry, Yoga, already draws.
