Radiesthesia is the practice of using a pendulum, or sometimes a rod, held over a person, object, map, or sample, to detect claimed subtle radiations for purposes ranging from locating water and minerals to diagnosing illness or assessing the quality of food. The term was coined in France around 1930 by the Abbe Alexis Bouly, who used it to describe an extension of traditional dowsing into diagnostic and analytical uses beyond simply finding water or buried objects. It rests on the same claimed sensitivity to undetected fields as ordinary dowsing, and it has failed every controlled test to which that claim has been put, including the large Munich dowsing trials of the 1980s, which found no ability to detect a concealed target better than chance. It carries no direct physical risk, but real risk of harm when used, as it sometimes has been, in place of medical diagnosis.

Between 1987 and 1989, physicists including Betz working with Wagner and Koenig ran a large double-blind trial in Munich testing more than 500 self-identified dowsers across more than 10,000 individual trials attempting to detect a concealed water pipe. J. T. Enright's Testing Dowsing: The Failure of the Munich Experiments (Skeptical Inquirer, 1999) reports on that trial. The method was blinded experimental testing: dowsers attempted to locate the pipe's position without sensory cues, and their results were scored against the true, concealed location. The trial found dowsers performed no better than chance across the full set of trials. Radiesthesia, the wider practice of sensing hidden qualities including water or disease by pendulum or similar means, claims the same underlying sensitivity Munich tested directly, and no comparable blinded trial of it has shown better than chance performance either. Because the largest dedicated test of the claimed ability found no effect, the atlas records the claimed sensitivity as unsupported by controlled testing.

The Practice of Radiesthesia

A radiesthesist works with a small weighted pendulum, sometimes a rod similar to a dowsing rod, held loosely so it can swing or rotate freely, over a map, a photograph, a sample of food or water, or directly over a person's body. The direction, pattern, or intensity of the pendulum's movement is read as a signal, a clockwise swing might indicate a positive finding and a straight back-and-forth swing a negative one, in whatever specific coding system the practitioner has learned, and is interpreted to answer questions ranging from where underground water lies to which foods suit a particular person or which organ is under stress. Unlike traditional dowsing, which mainly locates physical targets such as water or minerals, radiesthesia typically extends the same basic method into diagnosis, quality assessment, and answering yes-or-no questions more generally, treating the pendulum as a general purpose detector of subtle information rather than only a locating tool.

The practice descends directly from dowsing and shares its central, untested premise: that the human body, or the instrument in the practitioner's hand, can detect a real physical field or radiation too subtle for ordinary instruments to register, and translate that detection into an involuntary, readable muscular movement. Practitioners generally attribute the pendulum's movement to this claimed sensitivity; the alternative and far better supported explanation, consistent with everything known about how the practice actually works under controlled conditions, is the ideomotor effect, in which a person's own unconscious muscular tension, shaped by their expectation of the answer, produces the pendulum's apparently independent movement without any external field involved at all.

Testing Radiesthesia's Claims

Radiesthesia has not generally been tested as a distinct discipline in its own large-scale trials, but because it shares dowsing's exact claimed mechanism, an unexplained physical sensitivity manifested as an involuntary hand or pendulum movement, the extensive controlled testing done on dowsing applies directly to it. The largest and most rigorous such test remains the Munich dowsing trials of the late 1980s, in which physicists tested more than five hundred self-identified dowsers across more than ten thousand individual trials, asking them to detect a concealed water pipe under blinded, controlled conditions; the dowsers performed at a level consistent with chance, with no participant demonstrating reliable accuracy across repeated attempts. Comparable blinded tests of pendulum-based diagnosis specifically, asking radiesthesists to identify a known medical condition, contaminated sample, or similar target without any sensory cue, have likewise found no accuracy beyond chance.

The consistent explanation offered by researchers for why the pendulum nonetheless appears to move meaningfully is the ideomotor effect, first demonstrated in a related context by Michael Faraday's 1853 investigation of table-turning, in which he showed that participants' own small, unconscious muscular movements, driven by expectation, were sufficient to produce apparently independent motion without any external force. Because radiesthesia involves no substance or physical intervention, it carries no direct toxicity or injury risk in itself; its documented harm is entirely indirect, arising in the minority of cases where a pendulum-based health assessment substitutes for, or delays, a properly conducted medical diagnosis.
