The Ten Heavenly Stems, Tiangan, are a cyclical set of ten symbols that pair with the Twelve Earthly Branches to form the sexagenary cycle used throughout Chinese calendrical, divinatory and cosmological reckoning, each stem also carrying a Five Phases element and a yin or yang polarity. Each of the ten stems has an entry of its own; this is the system they belong to.

Ten Days, Not Ten Gods

The Ten Heavenly Stems are one of the two cyclical sets, alongside the Twelve Earthly Branches, that Chinese calendrical reckoning has combined into a single sixty-term sequence, the sexagenary cycle, for at least three thousand years. Their earliest attested use has nothing to do with fate calculation: Shang dynasty oracle bone inscriptions from roughly 1250 to 1050 BC already name the ten stems, Jia, Yi, Bing, Ding, Wu, Ji, Geng, Xin, Ren and Gui, as the ten days of the Shang royal ritual week, each day given over to sacrifices for a specific set of royal ancestors whose posthumous names themselves incorporated a stem.

Only later did the stems accumulate the cosmological correspondences that make them recognizable to a modern reader: each stem was assigned one of the Five Phases, wood, fire, earth, metal and water, taken in pairs so that two stems share each phase, and within each pair one stem was classified yang and the other yin, giving the full set of ten a complete and internally balanced structure of phase and polarity. Combined with the Twelve Earthly Branches, which carry their own animal and phase correspondences, the stems generate the sixty distinct year, month, day and hour designations of the ganzhi system still used today in the Chinese calendar, in Bazi four pillars fate calculation, and in the naming conventions of Chinese historical chronicles.

The System Behind Ten Separate Entries

This entry exists to hold the system as a whole, distinct from the ten individual stem entries already recorded elsewhere in the atlas, because a stem in isolation, Jia or Gui on its own, means little outside the structure that relates all ten to each other and to the Twelve Earthly Branches. The pairing logic is what carries most of the system's explanatory power: knowing that Jia and Yi both belong to Wood, with Jia yang and Yi yin, tells a practitioner of Bazi astrology or Chinese medicine considerably more than knowing Jia's bare identity, since compatibility, conflict and transformation between stems in a chart are read off exactly this shared-phase, opposite-polarity structure.

The stems also interact with Chinese medicine's body correspondences and with feng shui direction systems, though those applications elaborate the base cosmology recorded here rather than replacing it. Because oracle bone evidence places the ten-day naming convention centuries before any of the divinatory or medical uses that made the stems famous outside China, the atlas treats the calendrical function as the historically attested core and the fate-calculation uses as a later, well documented elaboration built on top of it, a sequence worth keeping straight given how often popular accounts present Bazi astrology as the stems' original purpose rather than one of several systems layered onto a much older calendrical device.
