The Gaia hypothesis was proposed by the chemist James Lovelock from the 1970s and developed with the biologist Lynn Margulis. It holds that the earth's living and non-living systems are coupled in a way that regulates conditions at the surface. Lovelock took the name, suggested by his neighbour the novelist William Golding, from the Greek earth goddess, and spent much of his career denying the reading the name invited: biologists objected that it implied a purposeful planet, while parts of the ecological spirituality movement embraced it as exactly that. Weaker forms of the proposal have fed into mainstream earth system science and stronger forms have not been accepted. It appears in this atlas because of its reception: it is one of the clearest modern cases of a scientific proposal acquiring a religious afterlife its author did not intend and did not want.

The Gaia hypothesis, proposed by the chemist James Lovelock and developed with the microbiologist Lynn Margulis from the late 1960s and set out fully in Lovelock's 1979 book Gaia: A New Look at Life on Earth, is a scientific proposal that the Earth's biosphere, atmosphere, oceans and soil interact as a single, complex, self-regulating system that has actively maintained conditions favorable for life, including a stable global temperature and atmospheric chemistry, across immense spans of geological time.

Lovelock developed the hypothesis while working on methods for detecting life on other planets, reasoning that a planet's atmosphere in chemical disequilibrium, far from what non-living chemistry alone would produce, could itself be a signature of life actively maintaining that disequilibrium, an observation he then extended into the broader claim that Earth's whole biosphere functions as a coupled, self-regulating system. Lovelock and Margulis presented Gaia as a scientific hypothesis about feedback mechanisms in earth system science, subject to ordinary empirical testing and revision, and named it, at the suggestion of the novelist William Golding, a neighbor of Lovelock's, after the Greek earth goddess, a naming choice that would shape the hypothesis's reception considerably beyond what its authors intended scientifically.

From Earth System Science to Earth Goddess

The Gaia hypothesis has had two largely separate afterlives that this atlas records distinctly. Within earth system science, a revised and more rigorously mechanistic version of Gaia's core claim, that life and its physical environment co-evolve through feedback processes that can stabilize planetary conditions, has been substantially incorporated into mainstream Earth system science, even as many scientists remained uncomfortable with the theory's early framing, which some read as suggesting the biosphere pursues stability with something like intention or purpose, a teleological implication Lovelock himself came to state he had not intended and worked in later writing to clarify away.

Outside science, Gaia was taken up enthusiastically within ecological spirituality, the Goddess Movement and related strands of contemporary Paganism, where the hypothesis's scientific content was often read alongside, and sometimes folded into, an explicitly religious identification of the Earth itself as a living, sacred, goddess-like being, a reception this atlas records as a documented but contested development connected to the thealogy recorded separately, distinct from and not required by the scientific hypothesis in its mainstream earth-system form. The two receptions, rigorous but limited scientific incorporation and enthusiastic but scientifically loose spiritual adoption, sit uneasily beside one another and are best understood as separate, only partly overlapping histories rather than one continuous story.
