Thealogy is the reflective work of the Goddess Movement, and its claim is that a tradition which speaks of the divine as female is not theology with a word swapped. Where classical theology begins from transcendence, thealogy characteristically begins from immanence, from the body and from the earth, and it treats religious experience and practice as prior to doctrine rather than as illustrations of it. It is written by people who left the traditions they were raised in, and by people who stayed and pressed the same questions from inside, and those two groups do not agree about whether it is a break or a reform. The word entered feminist religious writing in the 1970s and was given wide currency by Naomi Goldenberg's Changing of the Gods in 1979.

Earliest Attestation
Not established. Naomi Goldenberg's Changing of the Gods (1979) gave the word wide circulation, but earlier isolated uses in 1970s feminist religious writing are reported without a documented first coinage.
No source tracing the word to a specific first use could be located.
Attributed Author / Compiler
The word thealogy is variously credited to different writers of the 1970s. Naomi Goldenberg's use in 1979 is documented; earlier uses are asserted in secondary literature without a locus this pass could check.
No first-attestation search across feminist religious periodicals and conference papers of the 1970s has produced a dated printed occurrence with a page reference earlier than Goldenberg's 1979 use.

Theology With an A

Thealogy is a deliberate coinage, replacing the Greek theos, god, with thea, goddess, to name reflection on the divine feminine from within the Goddess Movement and related strands of feminist spirituality, a term that spread through feminist religious writing from the 1970s onward and is associated in particular with the scholar and priestess Carol P. Christ, among the concept's most influential popularizers and theorists.

The wordplay is not merely cosmetic: thealogy's proponents argue that centuries of theology conducted in exclusively masculine language for the divine shaped not only how God was addressed but what qualities were considered divine at all, favoring transcendence, hierarchy and disembodied reason over immanence, relationality and embodied experience, qualities thealogy positions as more central. Thealogy draws on a range of sources including reconstructed and reimagined pre-Christian goddess traditions, contemporary Wiccan and Pagan practice, and feminist critique of the major monotheistic religions, without being confined to any single organized religious body, making it as much a mode of theological reflection practiced across several communities as a single doctrine belonging to one of them.

More Than a Change of Pronoun

Thealogy's proponents are explicit that the project is not simply substituting she for he in traditional theological language while leaving the underlying concept of the divine unchanged; the deeper claim is that a goddess centered framework changes what the divine is understood to be, favoring an immanent divine felt as present within nature, the body and cyclical time over a transcendent divine understood as separate from and ruling over creation, and favoring relationality and interconnection over hierarchy and command. This has made thealogy influential specifically within ecofeminism and religious environmentalism, where the identification of the divine with the living earth, sometimes expressed through the figure of Gaia, supports an explicitly religious argument for ecological responsibility distinct from purely secular environmental ethics.

Critics, including some feminist theologians working within the major monotheistic traditions, have questioned whether thealogy's association of women with immanence, nature and the body risks reinforcing rather than dismantling older stereotypes linking women more closely to nature and men more closely to transcendent reason, a tension thealogy's own proponents have engaged with directly rather than treated as a settled objection, making thealogy's relationship to feminist theology more generally an active and ongoing conversation rather than one movement neatly containing the other.

The word is variously credited to different writers of the 1970s and this pass could not establish a first attested use from a source it had checked. Goldenberg's use in 1979 is documented; earlier uses are asserted in secondary literature without a locus.
