White Mirror (Seal 18)

White Mirror is the eighteenth Solar Seal, white and of the north in Arguelles's rotation, and it opens the fourth wavespell. Its stated triad is endlessness as its power, reflecting as its action and order as its essence, and it is read in Dreamspell practice for truthfulness, for seeing things as they are and for the cutting away of what is false. The mirror imagery is Arguelles's extension of an underlying sign whose meaning is sharper and more concrete.

In the Dreamspell tradition, White Mirror, Solar Seal 18, is described as governing order, endlessness and reflective clarity, built from the mirror half of Etznab's borrowed imagery. White Mirror belongs to the Dreamspell's White colour family, alongside White Wind, White Worldbridger, White Dog and White Wizard. The flint-blade, ritual-bloodletting associations Tijax carries in the living K'iche' tradition are not part of the Dreamspell's own gloss for this seal. Its Dreamspell wavespell is the eighteenth of twenty. Order and endlessness, the seal's Dreamspell gloss, draw on the mirror half of Etznab's paired imagery while setting aside the flint-blade, ritual-bloodletting associations the same sign carries within the authentic Tzolk'in tradition this atlas describes on its Tzolk'in day-sign pages.

The corresponding Maya day is Etz'nab', and it denotes flint or obsidian, the material of blades and of sacrificial knives; the Aztec equivalent day is Tecpatl, flint knife. Flint and obsidian are not decorative in Mesoamerican thought: they are the substances of cutting, bloodletting and sacrifice, and eccentric flints were themselves ritual objects. Polished obsidian and pyrite mirrors were also made and used for divination, which is the thread that connects the day to a mirror at all, and Arguelles has taken the mirror and left the blade. In modern highland practice the corresponding day is associated with truth, with strength and with the settling of disputes, which is nearer to the Dreamspell reading, but that is a living tradition rather than a source for it.

Etznab is the eighteenth of the twenty authentic Tzolk'in day signs, its imagery flint and the mirror, both a cutting blade and a reflective surface; the living K'iche' daykeeping tradition knows the corresponding day as Tijax, meaning flint or stone blade. In the directional scheme, Etznab belongs to the north and the colour white. Arguelles's Solar Seal 18, White Mirror, borrows only the mirror half of Etznab's paired imagery, setting aside the flint blade and its associations with bloodletting ritual and conflict recorded in Classic-period Maya practice, and building instead on reflection, clarity and order.
