Origin 1987 to 1990

MODERN INVENTION. Yellow Star is the eighth of the 20 Solar Seals in the MODERN Dreamspell system devised by Jose Arguelles (1987), not a traditional Maya day sign in its Dreamspell form. Its keywords are Elegance, Beauty and Art; its action is to beautify, its power is elegance, and its essence is art. It corresponds loosely to the Maya day Lamat.

Jose Arguelles (1939-2011), the American art historian and New Age author who devised the system and promoted it through The Mayan Factor and the Harmonic Convergence of 1987. 1Tradition: Dreamspell (José Argüelles, 1987)
Origin of the Name
Yellow Star is Arguelles substitution of 1987. The Maya day it stands in for is Lamat in Yucatec, Q'anil among the daykeepers of highland Guatemala, and the seal name is not a translation of either. 1Tradition: Dreamspell (José Argüelles, 1987)

Contested or Appropriated Modern Use
Maya organisations and daykeepers in Guatemala have objected publicly to this system being taught and sold as Maya tradition, because it displaces the 260-day count their own communities keep. That count is still kept, and it is not this one. 1

Yellow Star in the Dreamspell Scheme

Yellow Star is the eighth Solar Seal, yellow and therefore of the south and of ripening in Arguelles's rotation. Its stated triad is elegance as its power, beautifying as its action and art as its essence, and it is read in Dreamspell practice for artistry, harmony and proportion. It is also one of the seals where the underlying Maya sign has a strong and well-documented astronomical meaning, which the Dreamspell reading largely drops in favour of an aesthetic one.

In the Dreamspell tradition, Yellow Star, Solar Seal 8, is described as governing beauty, elegance and artistic refinement, built from Lamat's borrowed star imagery. Yellow Star belongs to the Dreamspell's Yellow colour family, alongside Yellow Seed, Yellow Human, Yellow Warrior and Yellow Sun, a group Dreamspell teaching glosses as "ripening." As with every seal, this reading is Arguelles's own late-twentieth-century construction, not the sense Lamat or Q'anil carries within the authentic Tzolk'in tradition. Its Dreamspell wavespell is the eighth of twenty. Elegance and artistry, the seal's Dreamspell gloss, are Arguelles's own additions, not a rendering of what Lamat or its K'iche' counterpart Q'anil signifies within the authentic, living Tzolk'in tradition, which reads the day instead through ripeness, abundance and the deer-and-rabbit imagery this atlas's Tzolk'in day-sign pages describe in full.

Lamat, the Day Sign Behind It

The corresponding Maya day is Lamat, and it is the day of Venus. The Maya tracked Venus with great precision, and the Dresden Codex contains a Venus table correlating the planet's synodic cycle of about 584 days with the 260-day count and giving prognostications, mostly warlike, for its heliacal rising; Venus in Maya thought is associated with war, with the taking of captives and with the timing of raids, an association shared with central Mexico. The glyph of Lamat is often read as a star or Venus sign. The Dreamspell reading of elegance and art has no relation to this. It is a clear instance of the general pattern, in which a sign carrying specific astronomical and political content in the Maya record is reassigned a general psychological one.

Lamat is the eighth of the twenty authentic Tzolk'in day signs, its imagery the star, generally identified with the planet Venus, paired with the rabbit; the living K'iche' daykeeping tradition knows the corresponding day as Q'anil, connected to ripeness and abundance. In the directional scheme, Lamat belongs to the south and the colour yellow, closing the Tzolk'in's second four-sign directional set. Arguelles's Solar Seal 8, Yellow Star, borrows Lamat's star imagery specifically, and the seal's Dreamspell gloss of elegance and artistry draws on the star's brightness rather than on the rabbit or on Q'anil's harvest associations in the living K'iche' tradition.

Derived From

Lamat, Tzolkin Day Signs

Why this is disputed. Jose Arguelles presented Yellow Star (Solar Seal 8) of his 1980s Dreamspell system as a rediscovery of the Maya day sign Lamat. Maya daykeepers who have kept the traditional 260 day count continuously reject that equivalence, since the Dreamspell count runs on a fixed Gregorian cycle out of step with the living, unbroken count, and Arguelles's own name, image and meaning for Yellow Star are his invention layered onto Lamat rather than a transmission of its traditional meaning.
