The Principality of Wallachia was a medieval and early modern Orthodox Christian principality in what is now southern Romania, founded in the early fourteenth century and existing, latterly as an Ottoman tributary state, until it united with Moldavia in 1859 to form the core of modern Romania. Its rulers (voivodes) governed alongside the Orthodox Metropolitanate of Wallachia, whose own establishment and endowment of monasteries made the principality's ruling house and its church inseparable in matters of legitimacy and public religious life.
