Harry Hay was an American gay rights activist, communist and labor advocate who cofounded the Mattachine Society, the first sustained gay rights group in the United States, and the Radical Faeries, a loosely affiliated gay spiritual movement he cofounded with his partner John Burnside, Don Kilhefner and Mitchell L. Walker in 1979 after Native American religions influenced the group. He has been described as the father of gay liberation.
