Jasmine Becket-Griffith

Jasmine Becket-Griffith was born June 4, 1979, and began her professional art career in 1997 after winning her school's spelling bee in eighth grade and using the prize money to buy art supplies, teaching herself to paint. She grew seriously interested in fantasy art around age thirteen, drawing on fantasy novels and tabletop games, and launched her first professional artist website at seventeen. Working primarily in acrylic on wood panel, she developed a recognizable style built around large eyed maidens set among fairy tale, gothic and mythological imagery, released commercially under her Strangeling brand.

Her work has been licensed onto merchandise sold through retailers including Hot Topic and the Bradford Group, and since 2006 she has produced freelance co-branded artwork for the Walt Disney Company as an independent contractor, with physical galleries carrying her work at Disney Springs in Walt Disney World, the WonderGround Gallery at Disneyland, the Corey Helford Gallery in Los Angeles and the Dark Art Emporium in Long Beach. She regularly exhibits at conventions including LA Comic Con, CatCon and GenCon, and works from studios in Long Beach and Julian, California.

With tarot reader Jay R. Rivera she co-created the Beautiful Creatures Tarot, pairing her paintings of mythical creatures with his card interpretations, and she separately co-created the Halloween Forever Oracle with author Tess Whitehurst. Her output spans traditional gallery painting, licensed collectibles and divination decks, making her one of the more commercially prolific working fantasy illustrators to have crossed into the tarot and oracle market.

Alongside her Strangeling art brand and her tarot and oracle collaborations, Jasmine Becket-Griffith co-created an entirely separate body of work with writer David Van Gough: the Death and the Maiden universe, a fine art and comic project built around its own recurring characters and mythology rather than the standalone big eyed portraits her card and merchandise work is best known for, giving her painting career a narrative continuity her divination deck work does not carry on its own.

That project sits beside a different kind of card work entirely: rather than only creating her own decks under her own name, such as the Beautiful Creatures Tarot with Jay R. Rivera and the Halloween Forever Oracle with Tess Whitehurst, Becket-Griffith has also illustrated numerous oracle decks for fellow deck creator Lucy Cavendish, supplying artwork for someone else's concept and card meanings rather than originating the deck herself. That illustrator for hire relationship, credited art rather than co-created concept, is a different working arrangement from the card projects she co-creates and shares billing on, and a different one again from her long running Disney collaboration and her Death and the Maiden partnership with Van Gough.

Across gallery painting, Disney collaboration, the Death and the Maiden comic universe, co-created decks under her own name and illustration work for other creators' decks, Becket-Griffith runs at least five simultaneously active strands of one commercial art career, a number the standalone spelling bee origin story of her professional beginning does not suggest on its own.
