Poemen the Great was a Christian monk and early Desert Father who lived from about 340 to 450 and is the most frequently quoted Abba in the Apophthegmata Patrum, the Sayings of the Desert Fathers. He was quoted most often for his gift as a spiritual guide, a role reflected in his name Poemen, meaning shepherd, rather than for feats of asceticism. He is considered a saint in Eastern Christianity, with his feast day on August 27 in the Julian calendar and September 9 in the Gregorian calendar.
