Saint Amun, also called Ammon, Amoun or Ammonius the Hermit, was a fourth century Christian ascetic regarded as the founder of one of the most celebrated monastic communities in Egypt, the settlement in the Nitrian Desert. He took his given name from Amun, the ancient Egyptian god, but was subsequently venerated as a Christian saint in his own right and was one of the most honored ascetics of the Nitrian Desert; Athanasius of Alexandria mentions him in his Life of Anthony the Great.
