Somananda was a teacher of Kashmir Shaivism who lived from about 875 to 925 CE, standing in the lineage of Trayambaka. He wrote the Shivadrishti, the first philosophical treatise of the school, and alongside his contemporary Bhatta Kallata was among the first Kashmiri Shaivites to set out the concepts of non-dual Shaivism in a rigorous, logical form. He lived in Kashmir, most likely in Srinagar, as a householder rather than a renunciate.
