The Eleventh House, the House of Friends and Hopes

The eleventh house is the eleventh of the twelve houses of the horoscope. It governs friends, groups and communities, alliances, and hopes and wishes, the wider circle beyond the family and the aspirations a person holds for the future. It is a succedent house, of moderate strength, following the angular tenth. The older tradition regarded it as one of the more fortunate houses, well disposed toward planets placed there and connected with good fortune and the fulfilment of hopes. These are the interpretive conventions of the astrological tradition for this division of the chart, in which the eleventh house describes the company a person keeps and the goals they reach toward; it stands opposite the fifth house of personal creativity and pleasure across the wheel, the axis of the individual's own delight against the wider group and its shared aims.

The Hellenistic Greek name for the eleventh house, Agathos Daimon, the Good Spirit, and the tradition's assignment of Jupiter's joy to this place mark it, alongside the fifth house of Agathe Tyche, as one of the two most consistently fortunate divisions of the twelve, a scheme already traditional when Vettius Valens was writing around 175 CE and set out systematically by Paulus Alexandrinus in 378. Jupiter's joy here, the great benefic finding its particular ease in the house of friends and hopes, reinforces a reading of the eleventh as a place of genuine good fortune received through others rather than earned alone, wishes granted through alliance and community, a benefic weight the house carries in the oldest layer of the tradition before it was ever described in the more individualist language of personal goals and aspirations.

The Eleventh House: Good Spirit, and a Sextile to the Ascendant

The eleventh house is a post-ascension, succedent, and its Hellenistic name is Agathos Daimon, the Good Spirit. It is the joy of Jupiter in the classical scheme, and counting by whole signs it stands at a sextile to the rising sign, so it is configured to the Horoskopos.

The names of the places run in a pattern that becomes visible once the aversions are marked. The eleventh and the fifth, Good Spirit and Good Fortune, are the sextile and the trine rising above the horizon on the western side; the twelfth and the sixth, Bad Spirit and Bad Fortune, are the two averse cadent places immediately alongside them. Good and bad in this vocabulary track whether a place can see the ascendant, and the eleventh can.

On the cusp, whole-sign gives the eleventh sign from the ascendant; Equal measures 300 degrees; the quadrant systems place it between the Midheaven and the ascendant as one of two intermediate divisions, computed differently in each.

Under whole-sign and equal houses this is one of the two houses in which a floating Midheaven commonly lands, the other being the ninth. A chart with the Midheaven in the eleventh reads the public standing of the native through the house of friends, alliances and hopes, which is a genuinely different picture from the same chart cast in Placidus, and worth flagging when it occurs.

Placed in House

Modern astrologers read Lilith in the eleventh house as the exile among the group. The placement is described as a fierce independence within friendship and cause, a refusal of the crowd's norms, and an insistence on freedom that accepts being an outsider.

Ceres in the eleventh house is read as nurture among friends and groups. Modern astrologers describe care given to one's circle and received from it, a tendency to mother friends or attract nurturing ones, and well-being tied to shared hopes.

With Chiron in the eleventh house the wound falls on belonging - a hurt around being the outsider, excluded from the group or never quite fitting. Astrologers read healing reached by accepting one's difference, and the modern tradition of this placement notes a capacity to welcome other outsiders and to work for those the collective leaves out.

Juno in the eleventh house is read as partnership grown from friendship. Modern astrologers describe a spouse who begins as a friend or is met among groups, a committed bond built on shared aims and freedom, and marriage that keeps a sense of companionship.

With Mars in the eleventh house energy is spent among groups, and astrologers read a forceful part in shared aims and hopes pursued actively. The tradition notes leadership within the circle, some friction or rivalry among friends, and drive lent to causes and the collective effort.

Mercury in the eleventh house sets the mind among groups and shared aims, and astrologers read thought and communication directed toward friends, causes and the future. The tradition notes an intelligence stimulated by exchange with others and ideas held in common, and a talent for the networks that bind a group.

The Moon in the eleventh house seeks emotional belonging in friendship and the group, and astrologers read a person who treats friends as family and whose feelings are engaged by shared hopes. The tradition notes comfort found in community and a nurturing instinct extended to the collective.

Astrologers read the North Node in the eleventh house as a movement toward community and shared aims. The growth lies in friendship, groups and the future, in finding one's place among equals and contributing to a cause beyond the self.

Modern asteroid astrologers read Pallas in the eleventh house as pattern-perception applied to groups, causes and the future. The strategy serves collective aims and reform, and the wisdom is one shared among allies.

Astrologers read the Part of Fortune in the eleventh house as fortune through community and hope. The tradition describes well-being found among friends, groups and shared aims, and good that arrives through the future one builds with others.

Saturn in the eleventh house brings duty to friendship and the group, and astrologers read serious, selective alliances and long-term hopes pursued through patience and organization. The tradition notes few but reliable friends, responsibility toward the collective, and ambitions realized slowly through structure.

Astrologers read the South Node in the eleventh house as a retreat into groups and detachment. The tradition describes a comfortable place in the crowd and the cause, a distance held as safety, that the person is asked to trade for individual courage.

The Sun in the eleventh house sets the self among groups, friends and shared aims, and astrologers read an identity realized through the collective and the pursuit of hopes larger than the personal. The tradition notes a life given direction by causes, alliances and a sense of the future.

With Venus in the eleventh house affection is extended to friends and the group, and astrologers read warm, harmonious alliances and pleasure taken in shared aims. The tradition notes a wide, congenial circle and love that often begins in friendship or common cause.
