Denomination is formally linked to four religions in this atlas: Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism and Islam. A denomination is a self-governing religious body that recognises other bodies as legitimately part of the same faith while remaining organisationally separate from them, and the word entered English use to describe a specifically Christian situation. Read each religion's own note on the link, and three of the four say plainly that the concept, applied to them, is a filing convenience rather than a description.

The One Religion the Concept Actually Fits

Christianity's own note says the concept genuinely applies: Christian bodies do have registers, polities and mutual recognition, the register of membership, self-governing doctrine and discipline, and settled expectation that the other bodies are not simply wrong, that the concept presupposes. This is the one case among the four where "denomination" describes rather than merely files.

Three Religions Whose Own Notes Say It Does Not

Buddhism's own note: Theravada, Mahayana and Vajrayana are not denominations in any useful sense, not separated bodies with rival memberships but different textual canons, lineages and practices, and monastic ordination lineages cut across them. Hinduism's own note: its sampradayas are lines of transmission rather than membership bodies, with no register, no boundary that must be crossed and no expulsion, and a household commonly keeps more than one orientation at once. Islam's own note: the Sunni schools of law are methods of legal reasoning rather than churches, and a Muslim may follow one and pray behind an imam of another, with no governing body or membership roll on either side. The link is real in this atlas's own model, all four carry it and all four are read as holding it; what three of the four religions' own cited accounts add is the honest caveat that the concept was built for one tradition and only extends to the others as a filing convenience.
