Corus International

Corus International did not begin as a single organization. It began as two: Lutheran World Relief, the joint relief and development agency of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, founded in Baltimore in 1945, and IMA World Health, a separate faith-based agency working in global health. In January 2019 the two agencies combined their operations, sharing staff, budgets and back-office functions while keeping their own names and their own boards. A year later, on 1 January 2020, that combined operation took a public name of its own. Corus International launched as the connecting organization standing over both agencies, formally registered as its own 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

The word Corus was chosen to suggest a chorus, many distinct voices working toward one end rather than one voice replacing many. That is also the structure the merger produced. Lutheran World Relief did not fold into Corus and lose its identity; it continued its own programming in smallholder agriculture, climate adaptation and emergency response under its own name, its own board and its own denominational sponsorship, while Corus took on shared administrative and strategic work that two separate charities had each been doing on their own. IMA World Health kept the same arrangement on the global health side.

The reasoning was largely practical. Two mid-sized faith-based agencies working similar territory could reduce duplicated overhead and present funders with one connecting brand while still crediting each member's own expertise and donor base. Corus has since grown that family to include several smaller for-profit ventures alongside its founding nonprofit members.

Corus International is best understood as a connecting organization rather than a single charity. Headquartered in Baltimore, Maryland, it sits above a family of member organizations that each keep their own name, their own governing board and their own programming, while Corus itself holds the shared nonprofit registration, coordinates strategy across the family and absorbs administrative work that would otherwise be duplicated across separate charities.

Lutheran World Relief is the founding member most visible to a reader of this atlas: the relief and development agency of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, working across nearly thirty countries in Africa, Asia, the Middle East and the Americas on smallholder agriculture, climate adaptation and emergency response. IMA World Health, Corus's other founding member, works the global health side of the same mission. Around these two nonprofit founders, Corus has added smaller for-profit ventures, including a technology company and an investment arm, extending the connecting model beyond traditional charity into market-based development tools.

Corus states its own mission in plain terms: to urgently end poverty, suffering and injustice wherever they afflict humanity. It also runs its own initiative, In School, aimed at expanding girls' access to education, led by education and technology specialists inside the Corus family rather than by any one member agency alone. The organization files its own audited nonprofit financial disclosures as Corus International Inc., distinct from the disclosures Lutheran World Relief and its other members continue to file individually.
