World Vision began in 1950 out of the wreckage of the Korean War, founded by Robert Pierce, an American evangelist and relief worker, together with Kyung-Chik Han, a Korean pastor whose own congregation had fled south ahead of the fighting. Pierce had gone to Asia to preach and found instead a continent of orphaned and displaced children he felt no existing organization was positioned to help quickly enough; the organization he built with Han was meant to close that gap directly, sponsoring individual children rather than only funding institutions. Pierce later left World Vision's own leadership, and in 1970 founded a second major relief organization, Samaritan's Purse, making him one of very few individuals to have started two of the largest Christian humanitarian federations operating today.

What Pierce and Han built has grown into something considerably larger and more diffuse than either founder oversaw directly. World Vision International today operates as a federation of interdependent national offices active in more than 100 countries, with dual headquarters in Monrovia, California and London rather than a single command center, and a staff drawn from multiple Christian traditions and other faiths rather than one denomination. The interdenominational structure was not incidental; it is what let a relief effort started by one pastor and one evangelist scale into a federation spanning a hundred countries without requiring every national office to share a single ecclesial identity.

World Vision's own public materials often cite a figure of 335 million vulnerable children reached, a number meant to convey the scale of a hundred-country federation in a single headline. That figure describes impact through policy advocacy and systemic change as much as direct service, and the same organization separately cites a related but distinct 223 million reached through advocacy campaigns alone, without publishing a methodology that lets a reader tell how much of either number is direct beneficiary contact and how much is broader reach. Rather than repeat a headline figure that cannot be checked against a clear definition, the more defensible number available is the audited one.

That audited figure belongs to World Vision Inc., the founding and largest single national support office, based in Federal Way, Washington, not to the roughly 100-office global federation as a whole: total revenue of 1,423,305,144 US dollars and total expenses of 1,423,738,245 US dollars for the fiscal year ended 30 September 2025, with contributions making up 98.5 percent of revenue. That is a real and substantial figure, but it is one national office's audited accounts inside a federation that files no single consolidated worldwide total, a structural fact about how the organization reports itself rather than a gap in its transparency.
