Named for Johan Gadolin, the Finnish chemist who began the study of the rare earths, and one of the very few naturally occurring elements named directly for a person. Jean Charles Galissard de Marignac separated it in 1880 and Lecoq de Boisbaudran isolated it in 1886. Gadolinium has an exceptionally strong response to magnetic fields and an enormous appetite for neutrons: the first makes chelated gadolinium the standard contrast agent for magnetic resonance imaging, the second makes it useful in reactor shielding. It also shows a magnetocaloric effect near room temperature.

Gadolinium was separated in 1880 by the Swiss chemist Jean Charles Galissard de Marignac and characterised by Lecoq de Boisbaudran, who named it after the mineral gadolinite. That mineral had been named in honour of Johan Gadolin, the Finnish chemist who had begun the study of the rare earths at Ytterby. Gadolinium is a silvery rare-earth metal with remarkable magnetic properties and a strong appetite for neutrons, used as a contrast agent in magnetic resonance imaging and in nuclear reactor shielding. Its many unpaired electrons make gadolinium strongly magnetic and a powerful absorber of neutrons, so that besides brightening soft tissue in MRI scans it serves in reactor control and shielding and in research on magnetic refrigeration.

Gadolinium-based MRI contrast agents, in wide clinical use since the late 1980s, are not risk-free: in patients with severe kidney impairment they have been linked to nephrogenic systemic fibrosis, a serious and sometimes fatal condition, prompting FDA and European warnings from 2006 onward, and subsequent research found that trace gadolinium can be retained in brain and other tissue even in patients with healthy kidneys, a finding that has driven ongoing regulatory review and a shift toward the safest, most stable formulations of the agent.

Named for a Chemist

Gadolinium is usually counted the first element deliberately named after a real person, honouring Johan Gadolin, whose analysis of the black Ytterby mineral in 1794 opened the whole tangled field of rare-earth chemistry. The tribute is fitting, for the ore that bears his name, gadolinite, was the source from which yttrium and a succession of other lanthanides were eventually drawn. This personal naming set a precedent later followed on a grand scale among the synthetic heavy elements, which commemorate Curie, Einstein, Fermi, Mendeleev and others.

Gadolinium has no myth or alchemical past; its distinction is to carry the name of the man who first parted the curtain on the rare earths, and, in modern medicine, to light up the soft tissues of the body under the scanner. Gadolin himself never lived to see the element bearing his name isolated: he died in 1852, nearly three decades before Marignac drew gadolinium from the mineral gadolinite in 1880, so the honour was entirely posthumous, resting on his foundational 1794 analysis of the black Ytterby ore rather than on any direct role in the later discovery. Gadolin held the chair of chemistry at Turku until his retirement in 1822, leaving the rare-earth field he had opened to the generation of chemists who came after him.
