Sunbuliye

The Sunbuliye is a branch of the Halveti order of Sufi Islam, founded by Sunbul Sinan Efendi, known in Turkey as Sunbul Effendi, who was born around 1464 to 1480 in Merzifon and became a dervish under Shaikh Muhammed Jemaleddin al-Khalwati at the Koja Mustafa Pasha Dergah in Istanbul. After serving as his sheikh's representative in Egypt, he returned to Istanbul to lead the Halveti order until his death in 1529 and is buried at the Koja Mustafa Pasha Tekke, which served as the order's center for several hundred years with its grand sheikhs buried there. The tekke was closed when Turkey became a republic and later reopened as a mosque, and Sunbul Effendi's resting place remains a pilgrimage site; the order's genealogy runs from Pir Umar Khalwati's Khalwatiyya through Pir Muhammed Jemaleddin's Jemaliye branch to Pir Sumbul Sinan's Sunbuliye, with a further Merkeziye branch under Pir Musa Muslihuddin, known as Merkez Effendi.
