One through whom the dead are held to communicate. The office is defined by claimed faculty and validated by demonstration, and organised Spiritualism developed accreditation to compensate, the Spiritualists' National Union in Britain certifies mediums, and Spiritualist churches employ them to give public demonstrations as part of a service. Kardecist Spiritism, strong in Brazil, distinguishes several types of mediumship and treats it as a capacity to be developed under discipline rather than a performance, and insists that mediums not be paid, which is a substantive doctrinal difference from Anglo-American Spiritualism.

The history of the practice is inseparable from the history of its exposure. The Fox sisters, whose 1848 rappings began modern Spiritualism, confessed in 1888 to producing the sounds with their toe joints, and Margaret Fox demonstrated the method on stage. Harry Houdini spent the 1920s exposing fraudulent mediums, and the Scientific American committee he sat on is the standard case study. Seance-room physical mediumship largely did not survive that scrutiny; mental mediumship continues and is not testable in the same way.

The One Through Whom the Dead Are Said to Speak

A medium is one through whom the dead are held to communicate, and the office is defined by a claimed faculty and validated, in organised practice, by demonstration.

The claimed faculty

The medium claims the ability to receive and relay communications from the spirits of the dead, whether by speech, writing, or other means, acting as a channel between the living and the departed, so the office rests on a claimed faculty of contact rather than on any ordination or training in the ordinary sense, though practitioners often speak of developing the gift. The demonstration of the faculty, the delivering of messages held to come from the dead, is what establishes and sustains a medium standing among those who accept the practice.

Spiritualism and its scrutiny

The medium is central to Spiritualism and Spiritism, the movements that arose in the nineteenth century around the belief that the dead can be contacted and that they communicate through mediums, and in these organised forms the office is embedded in churches and societies with their own recognition of mediums. The claims of mediums have been the subject of intense scrutiny and repeated exposure of fraud, and they remain rejected by mainstream science and by many religious traditions, so an honest account records both the sincerity of many practitioners and believers and the long record of investigation and debunking. The figure has parallels in the possessed and the oracular of many cultures, but the medium in the strict sense belongs to the modern movements built around communication with the dead.

The Rappings That Started a Movement, and the Confession That Followed

Modern Spiritualism is conventionally dated to a specific event: in 1848 the Fox sisters, Kate and Margaret, in Hydesville, New York, reported communicating with a spirit through a series of rapping sounds, a claim that spread rapidly and is credited with launching Spiritualism as an organised movement across the United States and then Britain within a few years. Margaret Fox published a signed confession in 1888 stating that the rappings had been produced by cracking her own joints, then partially recanted that confession the following year, leaving the movement's founding event permanently and, by design of the historical record itself, unresolvable as either genuine phenomenon or admitted fraud.

Despite that unresolved founding scandal, and the long subsequent history of exposed fraud among individual mediums, Spiritualism survived and institutionalised, and organised Spiritualist churches, including the National Spiritualist Association of Churches in the United States and the Spiritualists' National Union in Britain, continue to operate today as recognised religious bodies with their own ordained mediums, doctrine and regular services, a durable religious institution built on a claim that mainstream science has never accepted and that the movement's own founding figures partially disavowed.
