The wording of the Sabian symbol for this degree is not reproduced here. The phrasing in general circulation is Dane Rudhyar's, from An Astrological Mandala (1973), and stays in copyright until 2069. The atlas has withheld its own reading of the degree along with it, because that reading followed the copyrighted image closely enough to stand in for it. What remains is the degree itself, its sign, its decan and its term, which are facts about the zodiac and belong to nobody.

The Sun Shining Brightly
An older, independent picture-set for the degrees exists too: John Thomas, the Welsh astrologer who wrote as Charubel, published his own image for every degree in 1898, decades before the Balboa Park session. For this degree his catalogue describes the sun shining brightly. Counting from Libra's start, this is the twentieth degree, placing it in the sign's second decan. Its decan is ruled by Saturn rather than Venus, which colors the degree with something Libra does not supply on its own.
The narrower term division belongs to Jupiter, a still finer layer of rulership laid across the sign and decan. The original session behind this degree took place in 1925, when Marc Edmund Jones and the clairvoyant Elsie Wheeler drew all 360 cards blind, in Balboa Park, San Diego, one degree at a time. Jones printed his results in 1953. The phrasing that most sites and books repeat, though, comes from Dane Rudhyar's 1973 rewrite, An Astrological Mandala, which remains under copyright and is not reproduced here. Libra opens the second half of the zodiac and turns air's exchange into a question of balance between two parties. What a degree reading offers here is orientation rather than forecast, a way of naming exactly where in Libra's cycle a person or moment sits.
Libra 20: Sunshine Unqualified
Charubel's image for this degree could not be plainer: the sun shining brightly. No landscape receives the light, no figure basks in it, no cloud frames it; the entry is illumination itself, offered without object. Interpreting an image this bare means respecting its economy. The sun is the zodiac's one indispensable fact, the source every chart orbits, and to shine brightly is its whole nature; a degree carrying nothing but that reads as unobstructed vitality, favour without condition, the moment in any life when the weather is simply good. That such radiance appears in Libra rather than Leo is the interpretive surprise, and the placement does real work: in the sign of relationship, light is what falls on both parties equally, the sun that shines on every side of a dispute without joining any.
There is an old judicial resonance in that, daylight as the element of fairness, dealings that can bear to be seen. The degree also tests people in a way storms do not. Difficulty organises us; unqualified brightness asks what we are when nothing is wrong, and some find that harder. Its shadow is glare, cheerfulness enforced, the insistence that all is bright used to forbid honest shade, and the subtler risk of squandering fair weather waiting for it to end. On a natal Sun or Venus this degree tends to mark constitutional warmth and seasons of unforced wellbeing, and its counsel is gratitude with a builder's edge: good light is for working by, so make, mend and plant while it lasts.
