A black-and-white ethnographic photograph taken during Maria Czaplicka's 1914-15 expedition to the Yenisei region of Siberia, showing an Evenki shaman standing with his drum, part of a wider set of images and objects she brought back to Oxford. The photograph documents the shaman's dress and drum as material culture: it is a record of who the practitioner was and what he carried, not an account of any rite performed with it. Czaplicka, one of the first women to undertake fieldwork of this kind in Siberia, later published her findings and the collection remains at the Pitt Rivers Museum, where later scholars have returned to her images and field notes to revisit the anthropology of Siberian shamanism.
