A fresco by Raphael, painted 1509 to 1511 in the Stanza della Segnatura of the Apostolic Palace, Vatican, gathering the great philosophers and mathematicians of classical antiquity beneath an architectural setting inspired by Bramante's design for the new St. Peter's Basilica. Plato and Aristotle walk together at the composition's centre; Pythagoras, Euclid, Ptolemy and Socrates are among the surrounding groups, and Raphael included his own self-portrait among the crowd.
