A Japanese surimono woodblock print, attributed to Teisai Hokuba and dated circa 1801 to 1818, from the series Shunshoku ressenkyo. It shows Zhuangzi, the Chinese philosopher known in Japan as Soshi, at the moment of his celebrated butterfly dream, in which he could no longer tell whether he was a man who had dreamed he was a butterfly or a butterfly now dreaming he was a man. Held today by the Art Institute of Chicago.
