A Mediterranean Society: The Jewish Communities of the Arab World as Portrayed in the Documents of the Cairo Geniza

S. D. Goitein was a scholar of the medieval Islamicate and Jewish world, and this multi-volume University of California Press work is his landmark study of medieval Mediterranean Jewish communal life, reconstructed almost entirely from the documents of the Cairo Geniza, the vast cache of discarded papers preserved in a Fustat synagogue. Its strength is unmatched primary-source density, Goitein spent decades reading tens of thousands of everyday geniza documents, letters, contracts, court records, to build a social history from the ground up rather than from literary or legal sources alone. Its limit is that the geniza material is itself Jewish and largely Egyptian in origin, so its detailed picture of daily life speaks most directly to that community and place, and a claim about the wider medieval Islamicate world beyond it needs a source with broader documentary reach.
