Gustavo Gutierrez's A Theology of Liberation, first published in 1971, is a primary text, the foundational statement of liberation theology by its own leading figure. Its strength is that it is Gutierrez's own articulation of the movement he is most credited with founding. Its limit is that, as a primary movement text, it presents liberation theology's own case for itself rather than an outside or critical assessment of it.
