Agni: The Vedic Ritual of the Fire Altar

Frits Staal was a scholar of Vedic ritual, and this two volume academic study documents the 1975 performance of the agnicayana, the Vedic fire altar ritual, by Nambudiri Brahmins at Panjal in Kerala, one of the last times the full rite was performed and recorded. Its strength is that Staal organized and observed the actual event with a team of specialists, producing a direct documentary record of a ritual otherwise known mainly from textual prescription, rather than reconstructing it from scripture alone. Its limit is that it documents one specific performance by one specific Nambudiri lineage in one particular year, and Vedic ritual practice has regional and lineage variation, so a claim about how the agnicayana is performed elsewhere, or was performed in earlier centuries, needs a source addressing that variation directly.
