Two bishops, fifteen priests and two seminarians were flown to Rome on 14 January 2024, one seminarian remaining in Venezuela, following Vatican mediation with the Ortega Murillo government. Alvarez had been confined to his episcopal residence since August 2022 and was sentenced in February 2023 to twenty six years and four months in prison. The article also records Pope Francis's 12 February 2023 Angelus remark that the news from Nicaragua had saddened him.
