Bengt Sundkler was a missionary and scholar who studied African independent churches directly through fieldwork in South Africa, and this academic book, published by Oxford University Press for the International African Institute, was an early and influential study of prophetic and independent Christian movements among Bantu speaking communities. Its strength is firsthand documentation of a religious phenomenon that was, at the time, poorly recorded elsewhere, based on Sundkler's own observation of these churches and their leaders. Its limit, openly noted by later scholars, is that Sundkler wrote from a missionary background that shaped some of his interpretive framing of these independent churches, and his 1948 fieldwork reflects one period before these movements grew and diversified much further across the continent.
