John G. Turner is a historian of American religion, and this Belknap Press of Harvard University Press book is his standard modern scholarly biography of Brigham Young, written from outside the Latter-day Saint movement with access to church archives. Its strength is that it treats the full record even handedly, including the westward colonization, the church's historical teaching on race, the practice of plural marriage and the Mountain Meadows Massacre, rather than either a hagiographic or a purely hostile account. Its limit is that as a single volume biography it necessarily compresses a long and consequential life, so a claim needing exhaustive detail on one specific episode is better served by a source focused on that episode.
