Brazil's own 2022 national census, from the Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatistica, is a government statistical source. Its strength is that it counts self-declared religious affiliation across the whole population, including the roughly 1.849 million who declared Umbanda or Candomble, about triple the 2010 figure. Its limit is that it captures only those willing to declare an Afro-Brazilian religious affiliation on a government form, which historically undercounts these traditions.
