Defixionum Tabellae Atticae

Richard Wünsch's Defixionum Tabellae Atticae, published by Georg Reimer in Berlin in 1897 as part of the Inscriptiones Graecae series, is the foundational critical edition of Attic Greek curse tablets, defixiones, gathering and annotating the corpus of binding curses recovered from Athens and Attica with the same rigor the Inscriptiones Graecae project applied to public inscriptions. Its strength is institutional and methodological: publication within the standard corpus of Greek inscriptions gave the defixiones the same scholarly treatment as monumental texts, and Wünsch's transcriptions remain a base reference cited by virtually every later study of Attic curse tablets. Its limit is that it is over a century old and reflects the epigraphic method and available tablet finds of its time, so later discoveries and revised readings mean a claim about the complete corpus or the most current interpretation of a specific tablet needs the newer scholarship that has built upon, and in places corrected, Wünsch's own editorial choices.
