Michael Dillon's history of China's Hui Muslim community surveys its migration, settlement and religious organization from the Tang dynasty into the twentieth century, including a chapter on the nineteenth century northwestern uprisings. Dillon gives particular attention to the Sufi menhuan, religious orders organized around a teaching lineage, active among Gansu's Hui communities, which Qing officials treated with suspicion as a channel for organized resistance, and situates the revolt's religious organization alongside the ordinary communal, economic and governance grievances Chu's narrower study documents in greater military detail.
