A reference encyclopedia biography of Edmund Campion, an English Jesuit priest captured at Lyford Grange in July 1581 after being betrayed by the informer George Eliot, imprisoned and tortured in the Tower of London for over four months, tried on 20 November 1581 on a charge of conspiring to raise sedition and dethrone Elizabeth I, and executed by hanging, drawing and quartering at Tyburn on 1 December 1581 alongside fellow priests Ralph Sherwin and Alexander Briant. Canonized in 1970 as one of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales.
