Eridu

Fuad Safar, Mohammad Ali Mustafa and Seton Lloyd conducted the excavation reported in this official volume from Iraq's State Organization of Antiquities and Heritage, documenting the ancient Mesopotamian city of Eridu, traditionally reckoned the oldest Sumerian city. Its strength is that it is the primary official excavation report from the actual dig, giving direct stratigraphic and architectural documentation of the site's temple sequence rather than a later secondhand account. Its limit is that it is a technical excavation report focused on the physical and architectural record, so a claim about Eridu's religious or mythological significance within Sumerian tradition needs a source engaging that textual and religious material directly.
