John Francis Faupel, a Catholic priest who worked in Uganda from 1937, wrote the standard narrative history of the Uganda Martyrs, first published in 1962 and reissued in a revised edition in 1984. Drawing on missionary correspondence, court testimony and the surviving oral record, Faupel reconstructs the sequence of executions ordered by Kabaka Mwanga the Second of Buganda between 1885 and 1887 against young Christian converts, chiefly royal pages, at his court. It remains the most detailed connected narrative of the martyrdoms and is the source most other accounts of the episode draw on or cite against.
