H. H. Scullard's Festivals and Ceremonies of the Roman Republic, published by Thames and Hudson in 1981, is the standard scholarly account of the Roman religious calendar and its festivals, working through the year's ceremonies and their historical development. Scullard was an established Roman historian. Its strength is that it remains a standard reference on Roman festival practice more than four decades after publication. Its limit is that scholarship on Roman religion has continued to develop since 1981, particularly on how far the reconstructed calendar reflects earlier practice versus later antiquarian systematization, so a claim resting on the calendar's deepest origins should be checked against more recent work as well.
