H. Idris Bell and T. C. Skeat's Fragments of an Unknown Gospel and Other Early Christian Papyri is the original scholarly edition publishing what became known as the Egerton Gospel, a fragmentary second century Greek papyrus containing sayings and episodes paralleling but not identical to the canonical gospels, edited by two British Museum papyrologists with direct access to the physical fragments. Its authority as the founding critical edition, providing the Greek text, translation and initial dating, is well established and still cited in subsequent scholarship on the fragment. As an early twentieth century edition, later papyrological and paleographic work has refined some of Bell and Skeat's original dating and textual reconstruction, so the fragment's precise relationship to the canonical gospel tradition remains an area where more recent scholarship should be consulted alongside this foundational edition.
