Handbook of South American Indians, Volume 3: The Tropical Forest Tribes, edited by Julian H. Steward, Smithsonian Institution, Bureau of American Ethnology, Bulletin 143, 1948, is a standard mid century ethnographic reference compiled by specialists on each tropical forest group it covers. Its strength is that it remains a foundational compilation still consulted for groups with little other documented ethnography. Its limit is its age, over seventy five years, and the era's own ethnographic conventions; later scholarship and the communities' own accounts should be read alongside it for any specific group it covers.
