Herero Heroes: A Socio Political History of the Herero of Namibia, 1890 to 1923, Jan Bart Gewald's 1999 scholarly history from James Currey, Ohio University Press and David Philip, is the standard academic socio political history of the Herero of Namibia across that period, covering the 1904 to 1908 German colonial genocide, missionary societies' mixed complicity, and the German administration's reordering of the territory afterward. Its strength is that it is squarely the 1904 to 1908 genocide fact this source is cited for, from a specialist historian. Its limit is that its own period, 1890 to 1923, does not reach later memorial or reparations politics, which need a separate, more current source.
