History of Indian Buddhism: From the Origins to the Saka Era

Etienne Lamotte was a scholar of Buddhist studies, and this Institut Orientaliste volume, translated into English by Sara Webb-Boin, is his standard scholarly history of Indian Buddhism from its origins through the Saka era. Its strength is that it remains, decades after its original French publication, one of the most comprehensive and heavily cited scholarly histories of early and classical Indian Buddhism, drawing on Lamotte's own extensive command of the primary textual sources across multiple languages. Its limit is its age, subsequent archaeological and textual discoveries have added detail Lamotte could not have addressed, so a claim about a current historical question should be checked against more recent scholarship alongside this still-standard history.
