Hoa Hao Buddhism in the Course of Vietnam's History

Nguyen Long Thanh Nam was himself a senior figure within Hoa Hao Buddhism and wrote this history from inside the tradition rather than as a disinterested outside scholar, a fact this record states plainly rather than leaving a reader to infer from the title alone. Originally published in Vietnamese in 1989 and issued in this English translation by a commercial academic-adjacent press rather than a university press, it is nonetheless one of the few book-length English-language histories of the movement available, covering Huynh Phu So's 1939 founding, his 1947 disappearance and killing, and the movement's later history under successive Vietnamese governments. Its sympathetic, insider vantage point makes it strong evidence of how Hoa Hao understands its own history and figures, and weaker evidence on contested points where the movement's own account and outside observers differ. Use it for the tradition's own documented account of its founding and history; a claim about outside academic classification of Hoa Hao needs an independent source alongside it.
