Instruction on Certain Aspects of the Theology of Liberation, known as Libertatis Nuntius, is the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith's own 1984 instruction warning against elements of liberation theology it judged incompatible with Catholic teaching. Its authority is that of the Vatican doctrinal office itself, so it reliably records the church's own position at that date. Its limit is the same as any single-party instrument in a live dispute: it states one side's judgment rather than surveying the theology it criticizes.
