Elizabeth Isichei's study, published in the Journal of Religion in Africa, traces the five successive Yan Tatsine risings in northern Nigeria between 1980 and 1985, led by the preacher Muhammadu Marwa and, after his death, his surviving followers. Isichei situates the movement's recruitment among impoverished migrant laborers, the urban poor and the religiously marginal, arguing the risings were substantially a revolt of the economically and socially disinherited even as she documents in detail Marwa's distinctive and, by mainstream Sunni standards, heterodox theology and his followers' genuinely religious self-understanding as a righteous community besieged by an unbelieving state.
