Harkness built this study directly from John Dee's own surviving diaries, the primary manuscript record of his angelic sessions with Edward Kelley, and reads them in the context of Renaissance natural philosophy rather than treating the angelic communications as either literally true or straightforwardly fraudulent. That is its real basis, not received wisdom about Dee repeated from earlier secondary accounts, but a return to what the diaries themselves record. Its interpretive framing, that Dee's project belongs inside the history of Renaissance science rather than outside it, has become the reference point later historians of the period argue with or from, which is a genuine mark of standing rather than a claim resting on the reputation of wherever it was published. It is a strong source for the historical content and intellectual context of Dee's angelic sessions.
